Our Good Father

What does a good father look like? I was blessed to have an earthly father whom I think
“good” is too modest of a word for him. He was a great father! He was loving, caring, gentle, not too serious (to the point of embarrassing in my teenage years with his gross sense of humor,) sensible, calm, and he loved Jesus! I know that not everyone has a fond memory, or even healthy relationship with their earthly father. My dad’s life on this earth was too short when measured by my own desires, but a perfect 54 years in what God’s plan was for him.

Regardless of our fatherly relationships on this earth, we can all experience a good Father, and truly, “good” is an understatement of what awaits us in this perfect and beautiful relationship.

Jesus prayed to God, His Father, right before He was crucified. Part of His prayer was for us. Jesus prayed for all future believers. That’s right, you and I were prayed for by Jesus before we were even born. He told Mary Magdalene in John 20:17 after His resurrection, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” He claims that God is our Father as well.

Jesus’ prayer for us in John 17 goes like this, “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them, and that I myself may be in them.

On this Fathers Day, thank God not only for your earthly father, but also that you have another Father, one who loves you perfectly and eternally, with a future inheritance that far exceeds anything you could ever hope for or imagine. Meditate on these lyrics by Chris Tomlin:

Good Good Father

Oh, I’ve heard a thousand stories of what they think you’re like
But I’ve heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you’re pleased
And that I’m never alone

You’re a Good, Good Father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

Oh, and I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching
For answers only you provide
Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word

You’re a Good, Good Father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

Cause you are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us

You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us

Oh, it’s love so undeniable
I, I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable
I, I can hardly think

As you call me deeper still [x3]
Into love, love, love

[x3:]
You’re a Good, Good Father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

You’re a Good, Good Father
(You are perfect in all of your ways)
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
(You are perfect in all of your ways)
It’s who I am, it’s who I am it’s who I am
